SourceMod 1.0 Released
Wednesday 19 March 2008
For those looking for an all-in-one administration tool for your Half-Life 2 game server, the development team for SourceMod has released its first official stable version. The mod boasts some great new features including lightning fast commands, an easy to use interface, and open-source code - meaning you can expect to see plenty of third-party plugins and improvements in the near future. While we haven't gotten a chance to test it out on our public servers, SourceMod appears to be a solid alternative for those looking for different programs to moderate their servers.
"SourceMod is a Half-Life 2 modification which focuses on server modification, server administration, and plugin writing. Plugins are scripted in the SourcePawn language, and they allow you to script actions on your server and access the Half-Life 2 (Source) engine with ease.

SourceMod is highly optimized and ideal for getting the most performance out of your Source servers, without the complexity of writing C++ code."

For more information on SourceMod or to download version 1.0.0, head on over to their Official Website.

- Valve’s custom Faceposer tool that allows users to produce choreographed sequences in the Source engine

Valve Bits: Steam Update And PS3 Utter Waste Of Time
Thursday 11 October 2007
In today's Valve news, first there has been an update to the Steam engine. Mostly minor fixes, however the update also fixes some bothersome things like the /me chat bug. Here is the full list of changes, just restart your client for the changes to take effect.
" - Fixed case where localized content would not always be downloaded for a game
- Fixed the serverbrowser "All" filter not always applying
- Added /me emote in Steam chats
- Fixed slow startup times due to corrupt WMI installs"

Also today, it appears Gabe Newell, Valve's co-founder, hasn't changed his unfavorable opinion of the Playstation 3 game console. A while back he openly criticized the game console for its difficult code and lack of value. Now, in an interview with EDGE, he reaffirmed his opinion, calling the Playstation 3 a waste of time.
"Edge: A while ago you said that you thought Sony should do a 'do-over' with PS3. Do you still think that?

GN: Absolutely. I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody’s time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There’s nothing there that you’re going to apply to anything else. You’re not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they’ve created. I don’t think they’re going to make money off their box. I don’t think it’s a good solution."

None the less, expect to see Half-Life 2: Orange Box for the Playstation 3 due out later this year.

We now know that the release was scheduled for release August 2nd, but has had a small delay. None the less, it is safe to say we may be using a beta version in the coming days.
"The Steam Community will see the addition of voice chat, user profiles and groups, organized matches, and opponent tracking to the company's popular gaming hub.

The service was originally marked for release in late July. According to Lombardi, more details of the launch are forthcoming in an official release. "

New Steam Community Coming In July
Thursday 21 June 2007
On the heals of Counter-Strike's unofficial 8th birthday (for those of you still counting), Valve has announced that is preparing to release its new Steam Community to all users this July. The new community will give users the ability to view gameplay statistics, communicate across all Steam games, and set up their own personal page for clan or group communications. Best of all, Valve has assured everyone that the update and these features will be available completely free of charge. This update will mark the largest for the Steam platform since its initial release in 2004.
"Beginning in July, Steam users can set up their own personal Steam pages and profiles, create and join groups, schedule games with friends, review who they've played with, see how well everyone played, chat with groups, chat via voice, and more. These new community services and features can be used with all Steam games, which include new releases and classic titles from leading publishers and independent developers.

Our community has given us great direction on the ways they want to see Steam evolve," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Adding these new community features to make it easier to connect with other gamers is something we've wanted to see on Steam for a long time and this latest update is just the start. We've got a long list of items that we're working on to make it easier for gamers to connect and play games on Steam"

We will keep you posted with any new information as the release date draws closer.

Half-Life Episode 2 Release Date Confirmed
Saturday 16 June 2007
Shacknews has announced today that it has spoken to Valve, which has officially confirmed the October 9 release date of Half-Life Episode 2. Valve has also confirmed that Team Fortress 2 and Portal will both be included with the release.
"Last night, Valve representatives confirmed to Shacknews that the studio's upcoming trio of Source-powered games will ship for all announced platforms on October 9, 2007. The suite, sold at retail and through Valve's Steam download service, will consist of the shooter sequel Half-Life 2: Episode Two, the team-based multiplayer game Team Fortress 2, and the action/puzzle game Portal."

While Valve is only responsible for the PC and Xbox 360 development process, Doug Lombardi attempted to quell rumors that the Playstation 3 release has been delayed - sorta.
"Today's news follows rumors originating last month that the PlayStation 3 versions of the games would be delayed into 2008. Valve's Doug Lombardi noted to Shacknews that development has been progressing well on all three platforms."

Either way, this post shows that Valve is making a step in the right direction, at least when it comes to a release date for the highly anticipated pack. For more information on this story, be sure to visit Shacknews for the complete story.

Steam Surpasses 13 Million Mark
Thursday 24 May 2007
Valve reached a major milestone today, officially announcing that it has accumulated an amazing 13 million user accounts on the Steam Engine. Not to take anything away from Valve, but we should point out that these are not unique accounts - so who knows how many users have multiple accounts registered. Either way, it proves what an influence Steam has on gamers world wide.
"We've approached the development of Steam the same way we treat our online games; we release something we've tested, we internalize the feedback, and then we release new features and functionality based upon the feedback received," says Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "In Steam's case, we have millions of customers who are gamers and dozens of customers who are developers and publishers. In the past year, we've added over 100 new titles from third parties, grown to over 13 million active accounts, and introduced new features such as Guest Passes and Free Weekends. This growth has taught us a lot and inspired many additional features and services that we'll be releasing later this year."

ATI - Valve Bundles Return

Well, now the bundles have returned with a new marketing deal which was announced a yesterday. One of the new deals highlighted includes a Radeon 2900XT, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 for $399. A little bit expensive, but definitely a great bundle none the less.

New Half-Life Episode 2 Screens
Tuesday 24 April 2007
Gamespot has posted several new screenshots of Half-Life Episode 2 as part of an interview with Valve's Erik Johnson. The interview offers plenty of inside information to the development progress of Episode 2 as well as what's next for the team. Here is a snippet from the interview.
"EJ: We've been building more technology into Source alongside the development of Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. Episode Two specifically will be taking advantage of cinematic physics, which gives us the ability to create large-scale destruction events that are physically simulated. You'll see that feature in action right at the beginning of the episode.

Meanwhile, the visual budget for Episode Two is higher than Half-Life 2 and Episode One, so we essentially have a higher "high end" on the graphics side. We made this decision as a result of tracking the rapid GPU adoption rate of gamers on Steam via our hardware surveys. Having moved to episodic development, we are able to more accurately target these early adopters and provide an experience that does a better job of scaling to the power of their systems. And we've built a new particle system into Source. This has put more of the control of our visual effects directly into the hands of the artists, resulting in the most graphically sophisticated game we've ever made. "

You can check out the complete interview over at Gamespot's Website. Also released with the interview were two all new screenshots of Episode 2. We have mirrored a preview of them below, but once again head over to Gamespo's website to get a better look at what Valve has released.
