Brazillian Government Bans Campus Party 08
Tuesday 05 February 2008
More fallout from the official banning of Counter-Strike in Brazil, as the justice department has released an order banning the game from this year's Campus Party 2008. As many of you know, last month the Brazilian government moved to ban sales of Counter-Strike inside the country, although it stated that LANs would be unaffected.

The Campus Party 2008 event is scheduled to take place from February 11th-17th at the Cecilio Matarazzo pavilion in the city of São Paulo, with the organization hoping that it will attract thousands of visitants during this week. There has been no official response from the tournament directors as to their reaction to the court order.

Now, all eyes will undoubtedly turn towards Brazilian national qualifiers, which currently has not found a national partner according to the ESWC website.

Portugal Team Disqualified From Nations Cup
Wednesday 23 January 2008
This year's Clan Base Nations Cup Counter-Strike tournament will be one nation short, Portugal. The team was disqualified from the event after one of its members used a "Silent Run" bug. Although Portugal managed to defeat the Czech Republic in the qualifier round with a score of 2-1, the Czech team manager protested the match and the victory for Portugal was reversed. Now the Czech team will move on to the next round, as Helder "coachi" Sancho, captain of Team Portugal argues his team did nothing wrong.
""I think it is unfair to lose a game that we won in the server and playing with 30 ping more than our opponent.

"The rule is ridiculous, and all the best players in the world do it, it does not make sense to forbid a skill like this, they are following what WCG 2007 did and we all know the kind of tournament it was.""

For more on Nations Cup and all of the standings, be sure to visit the Counter-Strike section of Clan Base.

Counter-Strike Banned In Brazil, LANS Excluded
Monday 21 January 2008
Counter-Strike, along with Everquest, will no longer be available in Brazil according to several news sources. The court order to cease sales in the country came from Carlos Alberto Simões de Tomaz, a judge from the Judicial District of Minas Gerais, who stated these titles have been considered "inappropriate" and "harmful for consumers". The state of Goiás is currently the only state in the country to begin enforcing the ban, confiscating thousands of copies of both video games in stores. Procon, a federal entity established to defend the consumers' rights, is leading the enforcement process and already has begun notifying game retailers that they are no longer permitted to distribute the games. However, people who already own the titles, and LANs will not be subject to the ban.
"Nevertheless, Lima stated that Procon has already notified Brazilian on-line stores with Counter-Strike and EverQuest titles available for purchase in order to have these products removed.

According to the Procon superintendent, as Justice has not prohibited the use of these games - only their distribution - LAN centers in Brazil are not forced to delete these titles from the computers.

"We are notifing all LAN centers of a Judicial decision. To play or not to play depends on a moral criteria from every person and every family, since the games are prohibited for minor," Lima told told UOL.com.br."
EA, the official distributor of the game, has stated it has received no legal judgment on the issue and is awaiting one before issuing a statement. We will keep you posted as more on the issue becomes available.

Tuesday 31 July 2007
Some gamers are getting their first taste of Counter-Strike today as the game has finally made the jump to the Asian market. Released under the name Counter-Strike: Online, the development process fell largely to an Asian studio called NEXON, which promises to make the game tailored to the Asian market. Here is a piece of the press release from earlier today.
"It is our utmost pleasure to be able to develop Counter-Strike Online with Valve," said David K. Lee, CEO of NEXON Japan Co., Ltd. "We will be devoting our expertise in online game development and service know-how for Asian territories to Counter-Strike Online. Already a global phenomenon, we are confident we can grow the success of Counter-Strike with this new product by tailoring the gameplay for the millions of gamers in Asia, one of the gaming industries fastest growing territories.""

As far as differences in game play from the current Counter-Strike: Source release we aren't really sure, but we will let you know if there is any reason to fly to China to get the newest version.

Pure Mode Made Official
Wednesday 13 June 2007
The day that many people have been waiting for is finally here. A Source engine update, previously in BETA form, introduces a number of additions into the Source engine including the long awaited pure mode.

Servers can now force the client to match the server's files, by becoming a pure server. When a server enables sv_pure, clients who connect and play on the server cannot gain an advantage by modifying the game content. For more information about Pure Servers, click here.

Guess what this means? Those servers running pure mode should be free of persons using clear wall textures, brightly colored models, and other such cheap tricks.

The full change log includes details on the server browser displaying the total number of bots active in a server.

-In-game server browser only shows human players in the player counts column. Bots column now shows number of bots instead of a "some bots" or "no bots" icon
-Fixed servers with bots reporting incorrect number of bots when sv_master_legacy_mode is set to 0
-Fixed a server performance problem with queued packets
-Increased the maximum rate to 1 megabyte
-Added a findflags console command, which can list all cvars with a specified flag. For example: 'findflags server_can_execute' will find all console variables and commands marked with FCVAR_SERVER_CAN_EXECUTE
-Cheat protected many cvars and commands
-Removed cl_restrict_server_commands to prevent clients from being redirected
-Fixed user names reported as "unconnected" when greater than 32k players had connected to the server
-Fixed a client crash during authentication
-Fixed a crash when mashing the ~ key on disconnect
-Fixed a bug with sv_minrate and sv_maxrate not applying properly on the client
-Fixed the free roaming camera in SourceTV demos
-Fixed cl_language archiving itself and not updating correctly when the language changed
-Fixed a voice recording bug that could cause voice dropouts
-Fixed a rare crash when spectating in Counter-Strike: Source

Source Engine Beta Updated
Wednesday 06 June 2007
Update: It seems as though CS: Source will crash with this BETA if you have net_graph set to anything but 0. This issue will be fixed soon.

An update to the currently ongoing Source engine BETA was released tonight. Still unsure on how to participate? Simply add "-beta srcds0407" (without the quotes) to the end of your Steam shortcut command line.

Here is the list of changes, including added cheat protection and a DirectX 8 flashbang exploit fix.
Fixed a server performance problem with queued packets

-Fixed a Counter-Strike: Source flashbang exploit in dxlevel 80
-Game DLLs export ServerGameClients003 for backwards compatibility for plugins
-Only allows mat_picmip to be set to 0, 1, or 2 when in multiplayer and sv_cheats=0
-Cheat-protected snd_foliage_db_loss. Could be used to turn off ambient sounds in Counter-Strike: Source
-Fixed a crash when mashing the ~ key on disconnect
-Fixed a crash with certain materials being blocked from reloading due to sv_pure > 0
-Fixed bug with audio files of different formats overriding the files in Steam where it would use the original audio file's sample rate/format information after pure server rules forced it to load a different file

Valve Will Not Be Charging For Updates Anytime Soon
Wednesday 23 May 2007
With the pay for updates constantly increasing among PC Gamers, you won't be paying for updates for Valve games anytime soon. In an interview with EuroGamer, Valve's marketing director Doug Lombardi assured gamers that Valve updates will continue to be free.
"Valve has told Eurogamer that it has no intention of charging customers who download additional content for games like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2, despite the widely spread increase of paid-for updates in the PC and console world.

Valve's marketing director Doug Lombardi admitted the company had "pretty strong opinions" about how to handle post-release content. "Our philosophy there is, if you buy the product, we put more content out to keep the game interesting, we sell more products."

"Counter-Strike is number one and has been since '99 because we kept the game interesting, not because we tried to charge people more, and that's come back in sales of Counter-Strike," he added."

You can read the full article by visiting EuroGamer.

Get Ready For...Counter-Strike 2?
Monday 07 May 2007
Well for the first time word of a possible Counter-Strike 2, as well as Half-Life 3, was mentioned today. Gamehead, a featured show on Spike TV, let the word out in a four part segmented series focusing on Valve Software. However, it was segment 4 which ultimately caught the eye of gamers everywhere, summarized by "An interview with Robin Walker (TF2); Back to Gabe for news on Counter-Strike 2 and Half-Life 3." While it was hardly an announcement that a title is development, it does assure gamers everywhere that Valve is still working on building both the Half-Life and Counter-Strike series int he future. You can check out the video for yourself over at GameTrailer's Website, and be sure to catch more of GameHead weekly on Spike.

It also lets you form a party with your friends, and automatically find a game that you can all jump into and play together."

We will keep you posted as more information on the new community features becomes available.

Counter-Strike, Among Other Games, Source For Violence
Friday 04 May 2007
Following the recent Virginia Tech Massacre, in a search to find reasoning in the unreasonable, many political pundits has labeled video games as the main source for violence among youths in America. While most of it goes largely ignored, the signs of changing attitudes towards video games became apparent this week in Sugarland, Texas, where a highschool senior was expelled because in his possession, among other things, was a copy of Counter-Strike.
"Police discovered five swords in the bedroom of a Clements High School senior whose home they searched after getting complaints about a 3-D computer “shoot-‘em-up” game map the student designed, which depicted a portion of the school. "

While ultimately the ownership of swords and game maps that imitate the gamer's school is disturbing, is it really worthy of expelling the student as though it links him to potential violence? This story is still developing, and is sure to create quite a stir among the gaming community which proudly defends the idea that violence in video games has no correlation to violence in the real world. We will keep you posted.

Valve Hacked: Update
Saturday 21 April 2007
Alright guys, back from vacation so here is the latest information about what is going with the Valve hacker incident. The good news is the initial damage report on information that was compromised by the hacker named MaddoxX was over stated, and the only information really stolen was that which dealt mostly with cyber cafe's. According to Valve, the hacker was able to obtain the means to create Valve Cyber Cafe certificates, the Cyber Cafe customer directory, customer's credit card information, the multi-core tech demo, financial information on Valve, and other such items.

According to Valve, the hacker was able to gain access to only one of its servers, the one which was responsible for storing the information listed above. While this does mean that users who play in Cyber Cafe's should still be concerned, for the most part, most of the rest of the community was largely unaffected by the hacker. Here is what the site 1up is reporting on the situation.
"How did he do it? And is this even for real? According to him, "it's not a hack on the Steam application itself; there are flaws/bugs on their servers." Thanks to these flaws, there are all sorts of exploits he claims to have pulled off: "People with a little bit experience can create their own 'fake' but working Café certificates."

We ran all of MaddoxX's proof by a software security expert who requested anonymity. "This looks real to me. He found a way into [Valve's] Cyber Café software," the security expert confirms, "but what I've seen — the files pulled down — don't indicate whether or not he breached Valve itself."

Doug Lombardi, director of marketing at Valve, says, "There has been no security breach of Steam." However, he does confirm our expert's findings by adding, "The alleged hacker gained access to a third-party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its Cyber Café program. This Cyber Café billing system is not connected to Steam. We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to e-mail us at Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com."

According to 1up, in an even more interesting twist, is that MaddoxX has actually had access to the files since January and had sent multiple emails warning Valve about the security holes. Unfortunately, after being ignored for several months, MaddoxX decided to exploit the holes himself.

More information on this story is sure to become available, and we will keep you updated as we find out about it.

Steam Update
Tuesday 10 April 2007
Steam has released a new update on Friday, so this news is a little old but whatever. Steam has announced that they will now be offering guest passes for Counter-Strike: Source. For those of you who are awaiting news for Team Fortress 2, there some stuff in there that you might like as well. Check it out below.
"Everyone who owns Counter-Strike: Source will have a guest pass available to hand out to a friend next week. Guest passes allow folks to play the game for free for a few days. So if you've been trying to rope someone in to Counter-Strike: Source, now is the perfect time.

Recently we invited members of the press out to Valve to play Team Fortress 2. Game Informer has published a huge story broken up into three parts. You can read part one, which focuses on the history of Team Fortress. Part two is centered around some of the new features people will get to see in Team Fortress 2. The third part is a write up of Game Informer's play experience based on a match we played with them for about two hours. Apparently some people around the office didn't "get the memo" about going easy on the press in the playtest. We thought the article might be in jeopardy when our guys playing as spies repeatedly backstabbed the reviewer playing as a sniper. Luckily, we showed him how to clean up by placing sentry guns as an engineer... Spy soup is best served cold.

CEVO Announces Project Gamer Registration Is Now Open
Friday 23 March 2007
Big news from CEVO today as they have announced that their new league, Project Gamer, has officially opened for registration. The new league, which is dedicated specifically to Counter-Strike 1.6, is completely free and has great features including prizes, accessible and friendly customer support staff, and anti-cheat client protection. Team registration is also open for those of you who wish to play with your clan.
"Project Gamer is the next great evolution in online eSports, a league that will pioneer many innovations in the industry. Project Gamer is designed to be a so-called “Continuous League” which integrates the best elements of pool and ladder play into a league format. Seasons will not exist for Project Gamer; instead playoff teams will be invited to compete in a tournament while other teams will continue to be scheduled for on-going matches. When the playoffs finish those teams will rejoin the on-going event.

During registration, teams will be asked to specify their top two preferred server locations. This information will be used to assign teams to one of seven local conferences. Teams will be scheduled against other teams with the same preferred server locations (conferences), which will enable improved pings and fewer disagreements over servers.

Teams will also be asked during registration to identify at least two match times that they are eligible to play at on an on-going week-to-week basis. The team Captain or A-Captain will be able to change these times anytime. Teams will be automatically scheduled with pre-determined match times against other teams with the same eligible match times."

For more information on the Project Gamer Inagural Announcement, or to join the action, head on over to the Official CEVO Website for more information and instruction on how to get started.

Steam Engine Update
Monday 19 March 2007
Hey everyone, now that I'm back from spring break, here's what has been happening around the community. Steam has released a new update which included the communication updates which were announced several weeks ago, as well as the addition of Eidos games now available through the Steam Engine. The full press release can be seen below, and as always simply restart your client to receive the updates automatically.
"We've added a ton of games from Eidos, including all of the Hitman and Commandos games. We offer the games individually and in collection packs. If you purchase any of these games or collections before March 26, you'll receive a 10% discount off the regular price. More Eidos games on the way in coming weeks.

With the update this week to voice communication in Source, we want to point out some of the options out there for headsets. At Valve, we tested using a bunch of these Logitech headsets. They are fairly inexpensive, easy to set up, and the microphone does a really good job of picking up your voice. Also, once you have your microphone set up, make sure you go into the Voice section of the Options screen to test what you sound like in game.

Silverfall will be released on Steam and at retail on March 20. Check out the demo here, pre-purchase the game now and be ready to play when the game is released.

Finally, Black Mesa windshield parking permits are now available in the store (along with a couple Half-Life themed bumper stickers). The Black Mesa permits are individually numbered, so get them while they last."

Counter-Strike Ads Officially In Place
Wednesday 07 March 2007
Well after a few months of talking about it, Valve has officially placed in-game advertisements in Counter-Strike 1.6. While the ads in the games are still place holders, meaning they are only advertising other Steam games, it brings the beta of voluntary advertisements to an end and means real, paid, advertisements should be coming in the near future. Here\\\'s an in-game screenshot of the new ads in the Counter-Strike 1.6.

Steam Engine Update
Monday 05 March 2007
This week's Steam Update held news of a new and improved communication game for multiplayer games, including Counter-Strike and Day Of Defeat. The update will affect both type chat as well as voice chat. No date has been announced to when the communication changes will be released, but be sure to keep checking back for more updates.
"We'll be releasing an update soon to both text chat and voice communication in the Source Engine that will improve communication for people in multiplayer games. We've completely rebuilt the text chat system, adding the ability to browse your chat history right in the chat window and a filter to remove messages that clutter your game screen. Voice communication will be getting a huge boost in quality, so if you have a microphone sitting on the corner of your desk collecting dust, now would be a good time to plug it back in."

Counter-Strike 1.6 Advertisements In Testing
Saturday 17 February 2007
Counter-Strike 1.6 in-game advertisements have gone into the testing stage with a new CS Beta version which was released yesterday. The beta game is available to all Counter-Strike 1.6 players who want to get a look at what advertisements will look like in Counter-Strike.
"To run this beta version you will need to add -beta cs to your command line when you start Steam. This can be done by opening up the Windows shortcut you use to launch Steam and adding -beta cs right after Steam.exe. Please report any bugs or issue you find in this article."

As with most betas, there are some bugs including rendering problems that Steam is currently working on. Players currently have the option of not participating in the beta, and will not be subject to advertisements. However, presumably once the beta ends gamers will have no choice as to whether or not they will see the ads. Here is a screen shot showing a placeholder for the advertisements.

Episode 2 Release Date Moved...Again
Friday 09 February 2007
For those of you who believed Episode 2 might reach its announced release date, this will hurt just a little bit more. EA has announced today that Half-Life: Episode 2 will no be pushed back until sometime in the Winter of 2007. Hopefully in the meantime they can come up with some new box art as well, since the simple orange and black box with white text just isn't doing it for me.
"Electronic Arts, the world's leading interactive entertainment company, and Valve, the award-winning studio behind the blockbuster franchises Half-Life and Counter-Strike, today announced the naming and product configurations The Black Box and The Orange Box, two of the most anticipated action game offerings shipping worldwide this Winter 2007.

The Black Box will ship for the PC, and includes Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2. The Orange Box will ship for the PC, PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, and Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system, and includes all the content of The Black Box, plus the original Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One.

Innovative games included in The Black Box and The Orange Box include:

# Half-Life 2: Episode Two -- the second installment in Valve's episodic trilogy advances the award-winning story, leading the player to new locations outside of City 17.

# Portal -- a pioneering type of single player action game that rewrites the rules for how players approach and manipulate their environment - much like how Half-Life 2's Gravity Gun reinvented the way gamers interact with objects in the game.

# Team Fortress 2 -- an all-new version of the legendary title that spawned team based multiplayer action games. The game's daring new art style features the most advanced graphics of any Source-based game released to date.

"In less than 18 months, we've shipped 10 new products to retail outlets with EA Partners," said Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve. "The Black Box and The Orange Box represent a new approach to publishing multiple products, on multiple platforms and we know through our experience that no organization in the industry is better equipped to successfully launch new product types on multiple platforms than EA Partners."

"Valve is one of the world's premiere independent developers and EA Partners is thrilled to help them bring the groundbreaking action games in The Orange Box and The Black Box to market as their publishing partner," said David DeMartini, vice president and general manager of EA Partners.

The Black Box and The Orange Box are targeted for release this winter 2007."
